Engineered to the Duty

The value of a custom build is that nothing has to be compromised to fit a catalog. Shell diameter, tube length, pass arrangement, baffle spacing, alloy, connection style and code package are all selected rather than accepted.

Thermal rating comes first. The unit is modeled against the full envelope, not a single design point: startup, normal, turndown and upset. Fouling factors are chosen from what the streams actually do rather than from a default table where we can help it.

Mechanical design follows. Code calculations, tubesheet thickness, nozzle reinforcement, support design and, where the site requires them, applied nozzle loadings, seismic and wind cases. Third-party inspection is arranged where the jurisdiction or the specification calls for it.

Accessories are designed in. Sight glasses, vacuum breakers, insulation jackets, annular distributors, spray balls, davit arms, lifting lugs and saddle supports work far better when they are part of the drawing than when they are added afterward.

What We Need to Start

Both fluids identified with flow rates, inlet temperatures and required outlet temperatures. Operating and design pressures on each side. Allowable pressure drop. Any code, alloy, hygienic or documentation requirement. Available space and the orientation you have room for.

Then the practical detail that changes designs: expected turndown, known fouling history, how the unit will be cleaned, and how much clearance exists to pull the bundle. If part of that is unknown, tell us which part. We would rather size against a stated assumption than a silent one.

Reverse Engineering an Existing Unit

A large share of custom work is replacing something that already exists, sometimes from a manufacturer who no longer does. Old drawings are ideal, the U-1 data report is nearly as good, and a clear nameplate photograph with measured dimensions is often enough.

Replacement is also the natural moment to fix what the original got wrong: upgrade the alloy, change the pass arrangement, add a vent that should always have been there. The fit stays the same; the exchanger gets better.

Common FAQs

It varies more with material availability and code requirements than with complexity. Carbon steel and 316L builds move quickly. Exotic alloys, sour service with post-bend stress relief, API 660 and full BPE documentation all extend the schedule. You will get a schedule with the quotation.

Usually yes. With drawings, a U-1 form or a nameplate plus field measurements we can reproduce the nozzle geometry, support locations and overall envelope so the replacement drops into the existing pipework and supports. That is often the whole point of the exercise.

Yes, where the jurisdiction or your specification requires it. Tell us at quotation, because inspection hold points affect the fabrication sequence and the schedule, and adding them mid-build is disruptive and expensive.

Yes, and on plant work you generally should. Send the loading criteria with the enquiry and they will be applied in the mechanical design rather than assumed. The same applies to wind loading, insulation weight and any local jurisdictional requirement.
