Tubesheets and Tube Joints

The tubesheet carries the pressure differential, holds the tubes, and forms half of the sealing arrangement with the shell and the head. Its thickness comes from pressure and diameter. Its joint detail comes from the service, the consequence of a leak and whether the tubes will ever need replacing. And on hygienic duty it is where the decision between single and double construction gets made.

Because both ends of every tube terminate at the same end of the shell. The tube runs down, turns through the bend and comes back, so the far end of the bundle is simply a free-floating set of bends with nothing to seal against.

Rolled is adequate for a great deal of general service and keeps retubing straightforward. Seal welding is required wherever a crevice is unacceptable, which includes all sanitary duty. Strength welding is used where pressure, temperature, cycling or the consequence of a leak justify it.

Differential pressure and tubesheet diameter, together with material allowable stress and the support offered by the tubes themselves. The code calculation handles it, and the result is often thicker than people expect on high-pressure units.
