A U-tube exchanger is specified by three letters, a shell size and an orientation. Those choices decide what you can clean, how much pressure you can hold and whether the unit survives its own startup.
TEMA U-Tube Types
The U in a TEMA designation is always the rear head. BEU, AEU, BKU and DEU differ only in what sits in front of it, and that front end decides cost, access and pressure rating.
Shell & Head Options
E, F and K shells behave very differently around a U-bundle. The shell sets your LMTD, your vapor disengagement space and whether a temperature cross is survivable.
Orientation & Mounting
Horizontal, vertical or through a tank manway. Orientation decides venting, draining, support design and the clearance you need to pull the bundle for cleaning.
